What is the best way to test mobile game ad creative?

What is the best way to test mobile game ad creative before spending on UA?

Show the creative to real players from your target audience before it runs, and measure their reaction second by second rather than asking afterward whether they liked it. What determines whether an ad performs is what happens to a viewer's attention at specific seconds in the creative, and that's invisible in an in-market A/B test until the spend is already gone.

What testing before spend actually catches

An in-market test tells you which version of an ad won. It doesn't tell you which second of the losing version cost it the click.

In one comparison, six match-3 ads with the same rescue mechanic and the same basic format produced very different results, benchmarked against the top-performing creatives already running in the category. The difference was in the timing. The stronger-performing ads introduced the threat within the first 4 seconds; the weaker one waited until second 26. The stronger ads had emotional peaks every 5 to 8 seconds; the weaker one had flat stretches of 10 seconds or more. The stronger ads placed the call to action at the peak of emotional intensity, right after a near-failure; the weaker one placed it during a flat, low-engagement stretch. Four specific edits came out of that comparison, and none of them required shooting new footage.

What to test for, specifically

Testing 15-second creatives for a fighting game surfaced findings that applied beyond that one ad. A dynamic action hook in the opening 2 seconds mattered more than any other single element. A scene where music played with no action for 4 seconds cost engagement it never earned back. A payoff moment built around a distinctive character beat held up across both male and female viewers, even though the two groups reacted differently to other parts of the same ad.

One finding from that same test was easy to miss without second-by-second data: a mention of an Apple App Store "Game of the Year" award produced a real spike in engagement, but the spike came almost entirely from viewers watching on Android. A detail meant to build credibility was doing that job for one platform's audience and next to nothing for the other's.

Four things are worth checking for in any creative before it runs:

  • Hook timing. Whatever creates tension or stakes should happen in the first few seconds, not build up to it.

  • Pacing. Attention needs a reason to peak roughly every 5 to 8 seconds. Flat stretches longer than that are where viewers disengage.

  • CTA placement. The call to action lands best at a peak in emotional intensity, not during a lull.

  • Structure. The creatives that held attention followed the same three-act shape: establish the stakes, shift into the music or art beat, then cut to the call to action. Ads that skipped straight from establishment to CTA lost the middle beat that gave the ending its payoff.

How many creatives to test

Two creatives is the floor for finding a pattern. Six gives you a real playbook: enough variation to see which structural choices repeat across winners and which ones repeat across losers.

Across Emhance's creative testing work, studios have seen a 30% savings in ad budget from optimizing a creative portfolio this way before spend, and results come back with a 60% reduction in time to insight compared to a standard manual video review.

If you've got a creative ready to go live and want a second read on the pacing before the budget follows it, we'd be glad to take a look at it with you.
